Functions of frothers

Frothing agents play a critical role in mineral flotation by modifying bubble properties and enhancing separation efficiency. They stabilize foam, reduce bubble size, increase mechanical strength, and improve particle adhesion—optimizing both recovery and selectivity. This article explores their key functions and mechanisms in modern ore processing.

1. Prevent bubble annexation, so that the bubbles dispersed in the slurry have a smaller diameter and a certain lifespan.

2. Increase the mechanical strength of bubbles.

3. Reduce the movement speed of bubbles and increase the residence time of bubbles in the slurry.

4. Stabilize bubbles. The type and dosage affect the size, viscosity and brittleness of bubbles and the flotation speed.

5. Co-adsorbed with collector on the surface of mineral particles and play a synergistic role.

6. Coexist with collector in micelles and affect the critical micelle concentration of collector.

7. Frothing agents can be used to emulsify collectors or accelerate the dissolution of collectors.

8. The selectivity of the flotation process can be increased.
